🏠 How housing selection works at Indiana University Bloomington

Indiana University does not require students to live on campus, but incoming freshmen are strongly encouraged to do so and are guaranteed housing if they apply by the priority deadline. IU's in Bloomington houses more than 11,000 students across a large network of residence halls and apartment-style communities organized into geographic neighborhoods.

First-Year Housing:Freshmen apply for housing in the spring before enrollment, ranking preferences by residence center. IU groups its halls into clusters: the McNutt and Eigenmann high-rise towers on campus of campus, the complex, the Read/Spruce/Willkie (RSW) area, the Briscoe/Teter area near the main library, and the Foster Quadrangle. Students indicate preferences for room type (double, single, suite) and lifestyle options.

Living Learning Communities:IU offers more than 30 LLCs embedded across residence halls — among the broadest LLC programs in the country. Notable communities include the Hudson & Holland Scholars Program, the College (Kelley School of Business students, in Teter/Briscoe), the Media School LLC, the Law & Society LLC, and numerous identity-focused and major-specific communities. LLC applications are submitted as part of the housing application.

Wells Quadrangle — Honors and Thematics:houses several prestigious LLC programs, which requires a separate application and integrates intensive coursework with .

Upperclass and Apartment Housing:IU operates several apartment-style communities for returning students. Many IU sophomores and upperclassmen move to the large off-campus rental market in and around Bloomington's Kirkwood Avenue corridor and the areas west of campus.
