🏠 Johns Hopkins University — Parent Guide

Helping parents understand dorm options, safety, accessibility, and what to expect at Johns Hopkins University.

💡 Tips for parents reviewing dorm options:

🏠 How housing selection works at Johns Hopkins University

Two-year residency requirement.First- and second-year Homewood-undergraduates are required to live in university housing.

First-year placement. Most first-years live in AMR I (Royce, Vincent, Wilson, Lazear) or AMR II (Sylvester, Adams, Griffin, Clark) — connected corridor-style halls along The Beach. Apartment-style first-years live in (Charles Street) or McCoy Hall (St. Paul Street). Roommates are matched via summer survey.

Sophomore placement.Returning sophomores enter a class-priority lottery for Charles Commons (apartment-style, opened 2006), Bradford Apartments, or Homewood Apartments. Honors and academic Living-Learning Communities are placed together.

Upper-class options. Many juniors and seniors move off campus into Hampden, or Mount Vernon — though some remain in university apartments. The Charles Commons / Bradford / Homewood inventory is fully utilized by sophomores.

Greek life.JHU has an active Greek system with chapter houses along Charles Street north of campus. Several chapter houses are owned by the university.
