Montana State uses a two-phase system for new students. Those who apply October 1 through January 31 enter a lottery: everyone in that window has an equal chance of placement regardless of application date, with assignments sent beginning in April. Applications received February 1 onward are processed in strict first-come, first-served order; applications after March 1 are considered late and may not receive assignment notification until July.
Returning on-campus residents apply January 26–February 6 and self-select their room for the following year during a designated self-selection window using a randomly assigned timeslot. All applicants must pay a $300 nonrefundable prepayment to complete their application.
