🏠 How housing selection works at Northeastern University

Northeastern University requires all first-year students to live on campus. The university's co-op program means some students may be away for six-month work rotations, which affects housing availability. Upperclassmen may live on or off campus in Boston's Fenway and Mission Hill neighborhoods.

First-Year Housing:All incoming freshmen must live on campus. Students complete a housing questionnaire and preference form. Northeastern Housing assigns students to residence halls, primarily in the or centercampus buildings. Students cannot choose their specific may request a specific roommate.

Honors Housing:Students in the University Scholars Program may be placed in dedicated floors within with a stronger academic community emphasis.

Co-op and Returning Housing:Northeastern's unique co-op schedule means housing demand varies by term. Students on co-op typically do not maintain on-campus housing during their rotation but may re-enter the housing system for their return. This creates a manageable system managed by the housing office.

Upperclass Room Selection:Upperclassmen who wish to remain on campus enter an online room selection lottery each spring. Available options include apartments in the Davenport/Speare continuing rooms in existing buildings. Many upperclassmen choose to move to off-campus apartments in Fenway, Mission Hill, or Brighton — popular and walkable Boston neighborhoods.
