🏠 How housing selection works at Oberlin College

guarantees on-campus housing for all four years and requires students to live on campus for their first two years. After sophomore year, students may choose to live off campus, though on-campus options remain available to all upperclassmen. Oberlin's is deeply intertwined with its progressive, cooperative culture.

First-Year Housing:All incoming students are assigned to a residence arriving. Placements are made by based on a lifestyle questionnaire. Freshmen are distributed across a range of halls rather than concentrated in a single first-year complex.

Co-operative Houses (Co-ops):Oberlin's co-op system is a defining feature of campus life. The Oberlin Student Cooperative Association (OSCA) operates approximately 9 -ops housing about 600 students. Co-ops are collectively managed — residents cook, clean, and maintain the houses together. Each co-op has its own culture and community norms. Students apply to join a co-op, and membership is typically renewable each year.

Program Houses:Oberlin offers a number of program and theme houses for students with shared interests, including language houses, arts-focused houses, and wellness-focused communities. Applications are due in the spring.

Room Draw:Returning students who don't live in co-ops participate in a lottery-based room draw each spring. Seniors draw first, followed by juniors and sophomores. Students may pull in roommates or suitemates.

Off-Campus Housing:Many juniors and seniors choose to rent privately in the town of Oberlin, where housing is relatively affordable compared to urban campuses. The college maintains a list of approved off-campus landlords.
