🏠 How housing selection works at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Two-year residency requirement.First- and second-year students at RPI are required to live in university-managed housing.

First-year placement.First-years live on, in BARH (Burdett Avenue), or in additional halls including Davison, Cary, Sharp, and Nugent. roommate are confirmed via summer matching survey.

Sophomore placement.Returning sophomores enter a class-priority lottery. Common landings include, the older Polytechnic Apartments / Rensselaer Apartments, and newer apartment-style buildings. Many sophomores also pledge fraternities and sororities and move into chapter houses junior year.

Upper-class options.Juniors and seniors have access to the newer apartment-style options (City Station East and West, opened 2014–2016) plus older RPI apartments. Many also live in Greek houses along Sage Avenue and 15th Street.

Greek life.RPI has a large Greek system relative to its size, with multiple chapter houses on or near campus. Most are organizationally housed in dedicated chapter houses owned by the chapter or the university.
