Two-year residency requirement.First- and second-year SMU undergraduates are required to live in their assigned .

system.SMU's eleven each have their own dining facility, faculty-in-residence, traditions, and student government. Students are assigned to a commons before their first year and remain affiliated with that commons even after moving off campus.

First- and second-year placement. Both first-year and sophomore students live floors of their assigned commons. Roommate matching is done via summer survey within the commons.

Upper-class options.Juniors and seniors typically move into off-campus housing in University Park or the surrounding Dallas neighborhoods, into Greek chapter houses, or into a small number of upper-class units within the commons.

Greek life.SMU has one of the largest Greek systems in the country relative to its enrollment. Sororities and fraternities maintain on-campus chapter houses on Greek Row at the western edge of campus; many members and dues-paying boarders.
