Helping parents understand dorm options, safety, accessibility, and what to expect at University of California, Berkeley.
UC Berkeley does not require students to live on campus, but guarantees housing for incoming freshmen for their first year if they apply by the deadline. UC Berkeley's serves approximately 6,000 undergraduates across residence halls, co-ops, and themed communities on and immediately adjacent to campus in Berkeley, CA.
First-Year Housing:Freshmen apply for housing in the spring and are placed based on application date and preferences. The main freshman residence halls are located in two clusters: the Unit 1/2/3 campus of campus and Foothill/ on campus. Clark Kerr Campus (lower on the hill, known for its athletic facilities) houses upperclassmen and some freshmen. Students rank and indicate lifestyle options (substance-free, quiet floors, gender-inclusive bathrooms).
Programs (RTPs):Berkeley offers 17 Programs integrated into residence halls — Berkeley's version of LLCs. RTPs are organized around academic, cultural, and interest themes and include the Global Environment Theme Program (Unit 2), the Entrepreneurship & Technology Theme Program, the Social Welfare RTP, several language and culture houses (Casa Magdalena Mora for Latinx students, African American RTP, Women in Science & Engineering), and many others. RTP applications are part of the housing application.
Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC):Distinct from university-operated housing, the Berkeley Student Cooperative operates 17 co-op houses and one apartment ~1,300 students. Co-ops are significantly cheaper than university dorms, are student self-governed, and require work contributions. Application is separate from university housing; co-ops are genuinely competitive. Some co-ops have themed identities $1 — alternative culture, Hillegass/Parker — social, Casa Zimbabwe — Afro-centered).
Upperclass Housing:Returning students apply for on-campus apartments (Wada Apartments, Martinez Commons) through a continuing-student housing lottery. The majority of UC Berkeley upperclassmen live off campus in the dense rental market around Telegraph Avenue, Southside, Northside, and the surrounding neighborhoods of Berkeley and Oakland.
