University of Delaware uses a deadline-based assignment model rather than a rolling lottery. Incoming first-year students who apply by the priority deadline (May 18 for Fall 2026) can indicate room-type preferences, request roommates, and apply to Living Learning Communities; late applicants are assigned without those options. First-year students are placed by Residence Life rather than self-selecting rooms.
Transfer students are guaranteed housing if they apply by June 30. About half of incoming students choose algorithmic roommate matching based on lifestyle compatibility answers; roommate assignment notifications are emailed to UD addresses in late summer.
