UMass Amherst requires and guarantees housing for all newly admitted first-year students. New students submit a Housing Preference Application through the Housing Portal between June 1 and June 30; based on those preferences, the university assigns students to spaces within the Residential First-Year Experience, with assignment notifications sent August 3. Students interested in a Residential Academic Program (RAP) — a live-learn community tied to a shared course — must apply through a separate RAP Lottery that opens in mid-May. Transfer students are also guaranteed housing if they submit their preference application within the June window.
