Helping parents understand dorm options, safety, accessibility, and what to expect at University of Texas at Austin.
The University of Texas at Austin does not require students to live on campus but guarantees housing for incoming freshmen who apply by the priority deadline. With over 50,000 students, UT Austin has a large on-campus housing system as well as a massive off-campus rental market on campus and other surrounding neighborhoods.
First-Year Housing:Incoming freshmen apply for housing through the Housing & Dining portal in the spring. Students rank , and placements are made on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to earliest applicants. The main freshman-heavy halls are Duren, Jester, Kinsolving, Moore-Hill, Roberts-Prather, and San Jacinto.
Communities (LLCs):UT Austin offers over 20 LLCs that pair housing with academic advising, tutoring, and interest-based programming. Communities include the Business LLC, Engineering LLC, College of Natural Sciences LLC, Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, and others. LLC placement is part of the housing application.
Upperclass Housing:On-campus apartments (Dobie Twenty21, The Castilian, and university-run units) are available to upperclassmen. Many juniors and seniors choose to live off campus in the highly developed West Campus neighborhood, which is a dense urban rental district immediately adjacent to campus and specifically built for UT students.
Off-Campus Context:West Campus is one of the most built-up student housing markets in the country — hundreds of apartment buildings within walking distance of campus. Most UT upperclassmen live off campus. UT provides resources through the Off-Campus Housing website.
