🏠 How housing selection works at Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech does not require students to live on campus, but incoming freshmen who apply by the priority deadline are guaranteed housing. Virginia Tech's in Blacksburg, VA serves approximately 10,000 students across a range of traditional residence halls, suite-style buildings, and apartment communities clustered around the Upper and Lower Quadrangles.

First-Year Housing:Freshmen apply for housing in the spring before enrollment, selecting preferences by area and community type. The main freshman include: the, the, East Ambler Johnston (AJ) — the with the largest dining facility on campus, and the West Ambler Johnston areas. Students indicate room-type preferences and lifestyle options including quiet hours, substance-free communities, and themed housing.

Living-Learning Communities:Virginia Tech offers more than 20 LLCs integrated into its residence . Notable communities include the Galileo (engineering and technology), the Hypatia LLC (women in engineering), the Global Community, the ROTC community, and several identity-based and major-specific communities. LLC applications are part of the housing application.

Corps of Cadets Housing:Virginia Tech's Corps of Cadets — a voluntary military leadership program — occupies its own dedicated along the perimeter (O'Shaughnessy, Brodie, and others). Corps students live separately from the general and follow the Corps' own schedules and leadership structure. Application to the Corps is separate from general housing.

Oak Lane Greek Community:Virginia Tech maintains an on-campus Greek row on Oak Lane with approximately 18–19 chapters housed in university-owned facilities. Greek housing at VT is unique because it's university-controlled — chapter assignment comes through the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life in coordination with Housing.

Upperclass Housing:Returning students apply for on-campus apartments through a continuing-student lottery. Many VT sophomores and upperclassmen live off campus in the Blacksburg rental market — in the neighborhoods north and west of the Drillfield, along Main Street, and in the Progress Street and North Main corridor.
