Helping parents understand dorm options, safety, accessibility, and what to expect at Pennsylvania State University.
Penn State University Park does not require students to live on campus but strongly encourages first-year students to do so. The university has a large on-campus housing system across multiple neighborhoods, with housing guaranteed for incoming freshmen who apply by the priority deadline.
First-Year Housing:Incoming freshmen apply for housing in the spring, ranking their preferences by area or specific hall. Penn State's residence halls are organized into neighborhoods: East Halls, Pollock Halls, West Halls, and South Halls. Most freshmen end up in East Halls. Placements are made on a rolling basis based on application date.
Communities (LLCs):Penn State offers more than 35 LLCs organized around academic majors, interests, and identity communities. The has dedicated LLC housing. Other LLCs include the Engineering LLC, College of Business LLC, and many others. LLC application is part of the housing process.
Upperclass Housing:Upperclassmen who want to remain on campus can apply for apartment-style housing through a returning resident selection process (priority based on number of on-campus semesters). Options include Eastview Terrace and Southgate apartments, among others.
Off-Campus Context:PA is almost entirely built around Penn State. The downtown and surrounding areas have extensive student rental housing. Many sophomores, juniors, and seniors choose to live off campus, typically in apartments a short walk or bus ride from the campus core.
