DormScouter is built for students, and is a student-maintained guide to college dorm rooms. We exist for one reason: picking where you live shapes your whole first year, and most students pick with almost no information. We want to change that.

The problem we're solving

Housing lottery season rolls around and you get a PDF, a few blurry stock photos on the housing office website, and whatever rumors your floor-mates pass along. That's it. You can't see the actual rooms. You don't know which buildings have AC in August, which ones have working elevators, which floors are loud on weekends, or which bathrooms are clean. You're supposed to rank buildings sight unseen.

Meanwhile, thousands of students who already lived in those rooms know everything you want to know β€” and have no way to pass it on.

How DormScouter works

DormScouter is a public database of college dorms, updated by the students who live in them. For each college, you can drill down from campus to building to specific room numbers. For each room, you can see photos, floor plans, square footage, ratings, tags ("quiet floor," "great light," "radiator is loud"), tips, known issues, and honest reviews from past residents.

Anyone can read. Anyone with an account can contribute β€” and every submission goes through a light moderation step before it appears, to keep the site accurate and spam-free.

What makes us different

How to contribute

If you've ever lived in a dorm, you have information that would help someone pick next year. The easiest way to contribute:

  1. Create a free account β€” takes seconds.
  2. Find your building and room.
  3. Leave a quick review, add a photo or two, flag any known issues.

If your room isn't in the database yet, use the "Add Your Room" button on the college page. You'll be walked through the whole thing in a few steps.

Moderation and accuracy

Every submission β€” reviews, photos, tips, corrections β€” is reviewed by a moderator before it appears publicly. We do this for two reasons: to keep the site factually accurate, reduce spam, and to keep it a welcoming place for everyone.

Spotted something wrong on an existing page? Every dorm page has a "Suggest a correction" button. Our moderators review every suggestion and credit the contributor when it's accepted.
