DormScouter respects the intellectual property rights of others and expects users to do the same. We comply with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), 17 U.S.C. § 512. This page explains how to submit a takedown notice and how we respond.

1. Reporting alleged copyright infringement

If you believe content on DormScouter infringes your copyright, send a written notice to our designated agent at dmca@dormscouter.com (subject line: DMCA Takedown) including all of the following:

  1. A physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner or someone authorized to act on their behalf.
  2. Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed (or a representative list if multiple works).
  3. Identification of the material that is claimed to be infringing — provide the specific URL on dormscouter.com (e.g. https://dormscouter.com/colleges/example/dorms/123) so we can locate it.
  4. Your contact information: full name, mailing address, telephone number, and email address.
  5. A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use of the material is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
  6. A statement, made under penalty of perjury, that the information in the notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the owner's behalf.

Sending an incomplete notice can delay response. Notices that don't include all six elements above may be returned for clarification.

3. What happens after we receive a notice

If your notice meets the DMCA's statutory requirements, we will:

4. Counter-notification procedure

If you are a user whose content has been removed and you believe the removal was a mistake or misidentification, you may submit a counter-notice to dmca@dormscouter.com (subject line: DMCA Counter-Notice) including:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature.
  2. Identification of the material that was removed and the URL where it appeared before removal.
  3. A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief that the material was removed as a result of mistake or misidentification.
  4. Your full name, mailing address, telephone number, and email address.
  5. A statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court in the judicial district where your address is located (or, if outside the United States, the District of Wyoming), and that you will accept service of process from the person who provided the original DMCA notice.

If we receive a valid counter-notice, we will forward a copy to the original complainant. Unless the complainant files a lawsuit seeking a court order against you within 10–14 business days, we may restore the removed material.

5. Repeat-infringer policy

It is DormScouter's policy, in appropriate circumstances and at our sole discretion, to terminate the accounts of users who are determined to be repeat infringers of others' copyrights.

6. False claims

Knowingly misrepresenting that material is infringing — or that material was removed by mistake — may result in liability under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f). Both takedown notices and counter-notices are made under penalty of perjury.
