Somewhere around the second week of freshman year, a lot of students find out that the family phone plan is now their problem. When that happens, two prepaid names come up more than any others, and they are cousins. Visible is Verizon's own app-only brand. Straight Talk is Verizon-owned as well, and it is the phone brand you see at Walmart. Same towers, very different products.
Prices and plan details are from straighttalk.com and visible.com as of September 2026, using regular prices. Both brands run promo codes and first-three-months pricing that expire, so check the page before you commit. DormScouter may earn a commission if you sign up through a link here; see our disclosure.
Quick answer. If you are one person paying your own bill, Visible is the better deal: $25 a month with taxes already in the price, and hotspot you never have to count. If a parent is paying for two or three lines, or you want to buy a refill card with cash at Walmart, Straight Talk makes more sense. Both will cost less than the hand-me-down postpaid line most students arrive with.

Every plan, side by side
Seven plans between them. The table is wide, so on a phone you may need to scroll it sideways.
| Plan | Price | Data | Hotspot | What else you get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $25/moor $275 a year · taxes and fees included | Unlimited; can slow down when the tower is busy | Unlimited at up to 5 Mbps | 480p video, talk and text to Mexico and Canada | |
| $35/moor $375 a year · taxes and fees included | Unlimited premium data, 5G Ultra Wideband | Unlimited at up to 10 Mbps | 1080p video, roaming in Mexico and Canada (2 GB a day), one Global Pass day a month | |
| $45/moor $450 a year · taxes and fees included | Unlimited premium data, 5G Ultra Wideband | Unlimited at up to 15 Mbps | 4K video, calling to 85+ countries, texting to 200+, two Global Pass days a month, smartwatch service | |
| $35/moplus taxes and fees | 10 GB fast, then 2G speeds | Not a headline feature | Talk and text to Canada and Mexico | |
| $45/moplus taxes and fees | Unlimited, 5G | 10 GB at up to 5 Mbps | Talk and text to Canada and Mexico; second line $15 off | |
| $55/moplus taxes and fees | Unlimited, 5G Ultra Wideband | 30 GB at up to 5 Mbps | Walmart+ membership, 100 GB cloud storage, $100 anniversary device credit, $10 off home internet | |

Straight Talk's fine print gives the Gold and Platinum hotspot sizes and 5G Ultra Wideband to lines on the Verizon network, which is where new lines land. Some long-time customers are still on other networks with smaller allowances.

Where the money actually goes
The number on the sign is not the bill on one of these carriers. Straight Talk's plan pages say "taxes and fees apply," and depending on your state that turns a $45 Silver plan into something in the low fifties. Visible builds them in, so $25 is what leaves your account. On a student budget that gap is the single most useful thing to know about the two brands, and neither one puts it in large type.
Hotspot is the other place they split. Dorm Wi-Fi drops during finals, throttles on Saturday nights and often refuses to talk to a game console. Visible caps the speed of tethering but not the amount, so a laptop can ride the phone all week. Straight Talk caps both, at 5 Mbps and by the gigabyte on everything except the $65 plan. If you know your building's Wi-Fi is bad, this row decides it, and the current details are on Visible's plans page.
Straight Talk earns its keep in a different household: the one where a parent is paying for two students, wants a store to walk into, and already pays for Walmart+. The second-line discount is real money, Walmart+ on the $55 plan covers grocery delivery to campus, and a refill card bought with cash works for a student who does not have a credit card yet. All of that is spelled out on Straight Talk's plans page.
Which one, for which student
Where each one will annoy you
Visible
- 480p video on the $25 plan, and data that can slow down when a few thousand people share the campus tower on a Saturday night. The $35 plan fixes both.
- No family pricing to speak of. It is a one-line, do-it-yourself product on purpose.
- No stores and no number to call. Chat support suits some people and drives others up the wall.
Straight Talk
- The $35 plan is not unlimited. Ten gigabytes goes fast on a phone that streams, and the fallback is 2G. Students who pick Bronze for the price tend to be on Silver by October.
- Hotspot tops out at 5 Mbps even on the $65 plan, and the gigabyte caps on Silver and Gold put you back to counting.
- Taxes and fees land on top of every price you see.
Before you switch
- Check Verizon coverage once. Both brands use the same network, so if Verizon is weak in your building's basement, neither fixes it. Ask someone on your floor with Verizon how it behaves.
- Bring an unlocked phone. Both accept one. Make sure yours is paid off and unlocked before you move the number, and that it supports eSIM if you want Visible's app setup.
- Port on a weekday afternoon. Number transfers can take a few hours, and the night before an exam is the wrong time to be without a phone.
- Decide on the regular price. First-three-months pricing, autopay conditions and new-customer codes all run out. If the plan only works for you at the promo price, it does not work for you.
One student paying their own way: Visible. A family buying several lines, or anyone who wants a store, a refill card and Walmart+ in the bargain: Straight Talk. Either way you will have stopped paying postpaid prices for a prepaid phone.
