Howell House is one of Bowdoin College's College Houses, housing approximately 20–30 students with a live-in faculty Head of House. Like all Bowdoin College Houses, Howell operates under the program's defining model: a small residential community with weekly house dinners, shared kitchen privileges, and intentional faculty presence woven into daily residential life. The house has no central AC — in Brunswick, Maine, the academic calendar runs October through May, when heating is the primary climate need. Howell's house-style layout with semi-private bathrooms and a shared kitchen creates the conditions for unusually close residential bonds. The College House experience is consistently cited by Bowdoin alumni as one of the most formative aspects of their undergraduate experience.
