About Sundem Village

Sundem Village is Carleton College's newest residential option, opened in Fall 2025 and designed as a small-scale village-style community on the edge of campus. The development consists of several house-style units housing a total of approximately 40–60 students, with an emphasis on community living and intentional social programming. The substance-free designation makes Sundem a sought-after option for students who want a more deliberately quiet and health-conscious residential environment. Each unit in the village has a shared kitchen, semi-private bathrooms, and in-building laundry. Like all Carleton residential buildings, Sundem has no central air conditioning — the Northfield, Minnesota climate makes AC unnecessary for most of the academic year, and the newer construction incorporates passive ventilation design. Sundem Village reflects Carleton's ongoing investment in small-scale, community-oriented housing as an alternative to the large corridor halls that dominate the residential system.
