Howard University is a private historically Black research university (HBCU) in Washington, D.C., founded in 1867 just after the Civil War. Often called "The Mecca," Howard is one of the most prestigious HBCUs in the United States and has produced an extraordinary list of alumni in law, medicine, journalism, the arts, and politics — including Thurgood Marshall, Toni Morrison, and Vice President Kamala Harris.
