Le Château is Middlebury's historic French language house, built in 1925 and inspired by the Pavilion Henri IV at the Palace of Fontainebleau. It serves as the home of the Maison Francophone, housing nine students plus a French-speaking teaching assistant who pledges to speak only French in the house. The rest of the building is shared with the French department for classrooms and offices, and the former dining hall has been converted into a performance and events space. Le Château is the architectural centerpiece of Middlebury's internationally recognized language house system, which forms a bridge between the academic year and Middlebury's renowned summer Language Schools.
