Wharton Hall, built in 1917 and named for Joseph Wharton — whose family helped found the college in 1864 — occupies one of the most coveted spots on campus, situated between the main academic buildings and Sharples Dining Hall at the top of the central hill. The hall is divided into three sections (AB, CD, and EF): CD is designated for seniors and the other sections house first-year students, giving Wharton an unusual cross-class makeup. Rooms are well-maintained and many have views over the Crum Creek amphitheater. The central location and attractive common courtyard make it perennially popular in the spring housing lottery, and it lacks air conditioning in common with most of Swarthmore's historic buildings.
