About Snell House (Snell-Hitchcock)

[Hyde Park — Inside Snell-Hitchcock] Snell House occupies Snell Hall (1893), the older wing of the Snell-Hitchcock complex on the main quad. The smallest and most tradition-bound house at UChicago — about 60 students, deeply intellectual culture, weekly Wednesday tea, and an alumni network that runs across generations. Snell traditions include "house Olympics" rivalries with Hitchcock and competitive Scavenger Hunt teams. Unrenovated 1890s rooms with high ceilings and hardwood floors; communal bathrooms; no central AC; the building's historic character is its main draw. UChicago students are assigned to a house for their entire 4-year undergraduate career; house affiliation persists in the alumni network.
