About Murphy Hall

Murphy Hall is a women's residence hall at UMES named for John Henry Murphy Sr., publisher of the Baltimore Afro-American. Dedicated in spring 1943 after a 1941 fire destroyed a wood-frame classroom building, it helps define the Academic Oval at the heart of UMES's original 1886 campus, part of a 23.8-acre area listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2005. It houses the Art Loft for creative-arts students and a space for Aviation Science students.
