About Martha Cook Building

Martha Cook Building is the University of Michigan's most distinguished traditional residence hall — a 1915 English Gothic landmark on South University Avenue that remains one of the last women-only halls at a major research university. Named for the mother of William Wilson Cook, the hall's donor. Corridor-style rooms with in-room private bathrooms (a near-unique feature among Michigan dorms), no central AC. Martha Cook is selective, requiring a separate application, and fosters a formal tradition of community with weekly dinners, faculty guests, and a strong alumni network. One of the most architecturally and culturally significant dormitories in the Midwest.
