Smiley Hall, named for Board Chairman David E. Smiley, is UT's smallest and most intimate first-year residence, housing approximately 130 students in a two-story courtyard building at the heart of campus, directly next to Plant Hall. Originally a women's-only hall, Smiley was renovated around 2010 and is now co-ed. The building's sunny central courtyard — complete with outdoor furniture, picnic tables, and hammock hooks — makes it a favorite gathering spot. Suite-style bathrooms are shared by approximately four residents. Community amenities include billiards, foosball, entertainment systems, and a community kitchen. Smiley is home to two wellness-focused Living-Learning Communities: the LiveWell LLC and the First Year Wellness LLC. The hall does not have an elevator; students with mobility needs should contact Accessibility Services before requesting Smiley.
