Hinton James Residence Hall is UNC's largest single residence hall, a 10-story tower on South Campus housing approximately 800 first-year students. Named for Hinton James, the first student to enroll at UNC in 1795 (and for nearly two weeks, the university's sole student). Traditional corridor-style double rooms with communal bathrooms, no air conditioning. Hinton James is the iconic South Campus first-year hall — its size and central dining location make it the social hub of UNC's first-year experience on South Campus.
