Originally built in 1946 and renovated in 1973, the building was razed in 2004 and rebuilt in its current form in 2005. [First-Year Quad East] Built in 1946 alongside James Hall and renovated at the same time, Stearns Hall is James's neighbor and co-equal partner. The two dorms share an interconnected basement with music practice rooms and laundry, and their combined community is considered the most lively first-year social environment at Amherst. Three-story building without elevator. Houses mostly doubles. Students in Stearns and James often describe forming friendships that last their entire college career.
