Florida Gulf Coast University, founded in 1991, is a public university in Fort Myers in Southwest Florida. One of the youngest universities in the Florida State University System, FGCU has grown rapidly to about 16,000 students and is known for its sustainability focus, environmental science, nursing, business, and education programs. The campus features resort-like architecture surrounded by nature preserves and lakes, and the university gained national attention with its 2013 NCAA basketball "Dunk City" tournament run.
