About Baker House

Baker House is one of MIT's most iconic residence halls, a 1949 Alvar Aalto masterpiece designated a National Historic Landmark — one of only a handful of buildings designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto in the United States. The curved brick building sits on the banks of the Charles River with sweeping views of the Boston skyline. Corridor-style double rooms with communal bathrooms; no central AC (though window units are allowed). Baker has a laid-back, social culture and is known for its annual piano drop — a beloved tradition in which a decommissioned upright piano is dropped from a high floor.
