About Butterfield A

Butterfield A is one of three interconnected buildings in the Butterfields complex (A, B, and C), home to both first-year and upperclass students. Built in 1965, the Butterfields are 4-story walk-up buildings with no elevators. Air conditioning is limited to parts of the first floors only. A standout feature is that most bathrooms in the Butterfields are single-occupancy (not shared multi-stall bathrooms), offering more privacy than most Williams dorms. Butterfields A, B, and C form a self-sufficient community with Summerfields dining option, a large central courtyard, laundry rooms, common area kitchens, and study lounges. Upperclass students in Butterfield A can apply for the 9 "Copenhagens" — unique 6-person sophomore units of 4 singles + 1 double.
