Built in 1883, Charles Pratt Hall originally housed the college gymnasium and swimming pool, later serving as the Geology department before being converted to residential use and renovated in 2007. [First-Year Quad East] Built in 1883 (originally as gymnasium and swimming pool) and renovated in 2007, Charles Pratt Hall is widely considered the nicest first-year dorm at Amherst. Its unique origins as a gymnasium give the interior a cavernous, spacious feel unlike any other dorm on campus. Beautiful common areas and well-proportioned rooms. The trade-off is that its layout makes it harder to develop the tight floor communities seen in James or Stearns.
