Old East Residence Hall is one of the most historically significant dormitories in the United States — the oldest state university building in America, with the cornerstone laid in 1793. Located on UNC's historic North Campus in the original university quadrangle, Old East has been continuously used as a residence hall since 1795. The building underwent major renovation while preserving its 18th-century brick exterior. Traditional corridor-style double rooms with communal bathrooms, no air conditioning. Living in Old East is one of UNC's most distinctive residential experiences, connecting students to the founding of American public higher education.
