Butterfield is Wesleyan's self-contained residential college complex — a cluster of 4-story walk-up corridor buildings with their own on-site dining at Summerfields, a large central courtyard, laundry rooms, kitchen spaces, and study lounges. Butterfield houses a mix of first-year and upperclass students across class years, which creates a uniquely integrated community. The lack of AC and elevators is characteristic of Butterfield's older construction, but residents embrace the trade-off for the community and dining convenience. The large courtyard is a major social hub in good weather. Butterfield's self-sufficient model — with its own dining, laundry, and study spaces — makes it feel like a small college within a college.
